Having lesbian characters and scenes in movies is nothing new, in fact, there are a number of lesbian kissing scenes in classic films such as Madchem In Uniform and Queen Christina from the 1940s and 50s.
It is no coincidence that more Hollywood directors think a lesbian kissing scene is an essential plot development rather than some handy gimmick for publicity. Some films actually feature good writing, good acting and good plots. These include critically acclaimed films that are overcoming the trashy ones that give lesbian love scenes a bad name. Once confined to the indie section with limited range of titles to choose from, you can walk into a video store or go on the internet and find many quality films with tasteful lesbian movie scenes. They are no longer considered as catering to minority audience.
Previously, a visit to your local video rental or a quick search on the internet for lesbian movie scenes unfortunately turns up a whole different type of movie. In fact the majority are low budget fare. This is not a reflection of how good these movies are. Often, if a site even has a section on lesbian love scenes, you will see the same list of titles over and over again.
Among them are Desert Hearts, Claire Of The Moon and Cynara. Even though non of these films could be called an achievement in either scriptwriting nor film making, they were just about the only films in existence that had lesbian characters and were about lesbians. Often, the outcome for these characters were either a tragedy, or that they suffered some kind of mishap – indeed, the ending was almost always an unhappy one. Perhaps it was reflection of the times and the recognition that happiness is elusive and even more so if you are lesbian.
It could be partially contributed to by the gaping lack of quality films in circulation. In other words, that is all that is available at the moment. It makes you wonder why this lifestyle is not more visible in the movie industry since it the performing arts has a good number of active lesbians who are fairly high profile.
Time Changes Perception of Lesbian Movies
What a difference time and progress has made. There is no lack of steamy lesbian kissing videos found on the internet today and trying to compile a personal list of top favorite lesbian movie scenes in no particular order because it is really hard to rank them. The list might change order or even change altogether next week for all I know. Although I am tempted to come up with a top 5 list, it is tough for this genre as there are just too many great lesbian kissing scenes and ultimately, choosing personal favorite list is largely subjective and would mean leaving many that deserve mention as well.
Making a list of just 5 or even 10 lesbian love scenes will be an unfair representation since these will be just a tiny portion of what the film industry has made so far. Furthermore, it is inaccurate to say that this is a top 5 list when it would probably be more accurate to list it is a random selection of good lesbian kissing videos. Movies are commonly thought of as outlets for people to live out their fantasies but no one likes to admit that it includes these moments. One or two of these are probably unfamiliar to you but then again you miss out on the best lesbian movie scenes if you only stick with the popular movies.
